What is data inheritance?

Data inheritance allows grieving loved ones to handle crucial digital documents and login information that belonged to the deceased individual. This feature enables access to important data, facilitating the management of social media profiles and other accounts by either deleting or deactivating them when necessary. For more information on this feature and topic, please refer to our overview article on how data inheritance works, and why it matters.

What is the timeframe for beneficiaries to access and download the data?

After the blocking period ends, the designated beneficiaries can access and download the assigned files and passwords. They have a 90-day window to retrieve this information. Once this period is over, the account will be permanently blocked. For more information, please refer to Guidance for Activators and Beneficiaries.

Can I still access the download as a beneficiary if the subscription has expired?

If your SecureSafe subscription has lapsed, the inheritance process cannot be initiated for that account. To activate the inheritance process for an expired subscription, please reach out to us at beneficiary@securesafe.com.

Can beneficiaries gain access to my account?

Beneficiaries are provided access to a separate safe where they can download the files and passwords designated for data inheritance. They can only access this specific download and not your account directly.

What information can beneficiaries access?

Only the files and passwords that you specifically designate for your beneficiaries will be accessible to them. Any files or passwords that you have not assigned to anyone will remain private and will not be shared.

Who triggers the inheritance process?

The person who received the activation code from you is called the activator and in many cases this is a solicitor, or other person of trust. In the event of your death or loss of capacity, the activator enters the activation code on the designated landing page on our website, triggering the probate process.

How do I activate the data inheritance feature?

Once you have followed the steps outlined in our guide on configuring data inheritance, have determined your beneficiaries, and followed the provided instructions in our article on assigning data to beneficiaries, you have activated this feature.

Will data be transferred to beneficiaries immediately after activating this feature?

The data inheritance feature is not activated immediately after entering the activation code. It remains in a standby mode until the person of trust triggers the inheritance process by entering the activation code. Additionally, the data transfer will only occur after the blocking period has expired.

Will the files be transferred immediately after code activation?

The transfer of files and passwords does not occur right after entering the activation code. A precautionary blocking period, serving as a security measure, must pass before any data is transferred. During this waiting period, you, as the account holder, have the ability to halt the inheritance process if needed.

What is the blocking period?

During the blocking period, which is the time frame between entering the activation code and the actual transfer of data, you have the option to halt the inheritance process by logging into your SecureSafe account.

What do I have to consider when setting the blocking period?

Select a blocking period that provides you with sufficient time to halt an inheritance process that may have been initiated unintentionally. This allows you the opportunity to intervene if needed before the data transfer takes place.

What is the activation code?

Share the activation code with a trusted individual to kickstart the data inheritance process. It's important to note that this code is different from the recovery code, which is used to regain access to your account if you forget your password.

How do I pass on the activation code to my person of trust?

Share the activation code by downloading the PDF and sending it digitally or printing it out to give to the person of trust. If there are multiple trusted individuals you would like to pass the activation code on to, you can share the same activation code with each of them.

How does the automatic assignment work?

By enabling automatic assignment, you can easily assign all your files and passwords to one or more beneficiaries with just a few clicks. Any new files and passwords you save in the future will automatically be assigned to the designated beneficiary. For instructions on how to activate this feature, please refer to the guide on assigning data to beneficiaries.

How can I deactivate automatic assignment?

For information on how to deactivate automatic assignment, please refer to our guide on assigning data to beneficiaries.

What is the difference between beneficiary and activator?

A beneficiary is the individual who inherits the files and passwords designated for them. The activator, who is a trusted person, initiates the inheritance process by entering the activation code. It is possible for the activator and beneficiary to be the same person.

What information is needed when setting up the data inheritance feature?

When setting up the data inheritance feature, it is necessary to include at least one beneficiary. For each beneficiary, you will need to provide their name, mobile number, and at least one email address. The maximum number of beneficiaries allowed may vary depending on the type of subscription you have. Please refer to our guides on configuring data inheritance and assigning data to beneficiaries for more information.

Why do I have to enter my contact details when configuring the data inheritance feature?

SecureSafe requires your contact information to ensure that you are promptly notified in case the inheritance process is accidentally initiated. This way, you can easily log into your account and stop the inheritance process if needed. We recommend adding a secondary email address as a precaution since losing access to an email account is not uncommon.
